update: 01/01/2012
Documents suggest that earlier local Amateur Club activities had in fact
took place. However for one reason or another
these attempts were short-lived or inadequately documented. There
is presently on file an undated Milton Amateur Radio Club roster of 29 call
signs presumably dating from early 1982. All of the people
listed below are also on this roster. Mr. Ron Munion, KF4RV, kept excellent on-going records of all Club
activities from that initial meeting described below. Because of the
clarity of these records and the preservation thereof,
the Milton Amateur Radio Club will be known for all purposes, legal or
otherwise, to have began on Tuesday August 2, 1983.

festivities offered were numerous and included Pie & Watermelon eating
contests, greased pole climbing, one legged sack races and hay
rides. The Milton Amateur Radio Club was asked to help with
communications between the Festival Coordinator and various people setting up
and running the activities. We were not kept overly busy, but we did get a
good measure of Club endorsement to the
public. Many Club Members volunteered their time to be present
with 2 meter HT's to get the job done.

every way she can.

whole thing. This could be a 'Ditto' from last years entry. Once again the Club made a respectable
score. Club President Phil Wilson, K4LO, logged the lion's share of points. Phil
worked CW straight through the contest with only a minimal of 'coffee' breaks. Also this year more Club
members tried their hands at operating and all in all everyone enjoyed the
excursion.

for two reasons. The Library will no longer allow us to keep a filling cabinet

future meetings. Secondly, and incidentally, the Library is closed this week for
renovations. Phillip Pfeiffer had arranged for members to use the new location
on a trial basis. Membership will decide later whether to make a permanent move
or not.

Engaged
KD4BWQ James, to climb the water tower and replace the DB104 four bay dipole
that was damaged during hurricane Ivan in September 2004. The old antenna itself
was in good shape. The only damage was to the mast that held the antenna to the
tower. It was bent at almost a 90 degree angle. Club plans to refurbish the old
antenna and sell it at the Hamfest in July.

Hugh
Armstrong, NT4Z, coordinated the Club's Field Day 2005 activity at the River
Walk Pavilion south of highway 90. Operating 4A NFL class, several Club members
took turns at the microphone. Phil Wilson, K4LO, ran the CW station practically
non-stop for eighteen hours straight and racked up several hundred double
scoring contacts. Gerald Swan, AI4DE; Steve Ford, KG4SEW and Eric Scott, KI4JQJ,
made numerous attempts to break through the crowd and complete a Satellite
contact using both the International Space Station and Saudi Sat SO-50. Although
we were able to connect we couldn't score a contact. The Club
purchased a screened tent for the food area. Barbra Couch, K4BJC, coordinated
the food and drink area. Although a 40% chance of thunderstorms was
predicted, not a drop of rain fell. As usual, ants, mosquitoes and some
really horrible looking bugs were plentiful. And to round out the 2005 Field Day
event, the key to the restrooms didn't work and we were locked out. The
bathroom notwithstanding, with decent propagation, fair weather, good
camaraderie and excellent food, a great time was had by all who participated in
The MARC's Field Day 2005.

Hurricane
Dennis made a direct hit on Milton at about 2 pm this date. Club members
volunteered to stay at various hurricane shelters and provide voice
communications supporting Red Cross, Police, Medical, Firefighters and other
County Officials between the shelters and the main Emergency Operations Center.
The county 146.70 repeater was utilized for this purpose since it was placed on
generator power during the storm. The Club's repeater on 145.49 lost power
when the high winds came ashore and the brand new DB104 antenna mast was bent at
about 10 degrees. The Milton area sustained a great deal of structure damage,
downed power lines and many, many trees uprooted or broken
off. Power was restored to the club repeater about a week
later. It came back on the air in good shape. The antenna, while bent, still
works OK. The repeater building came through the storm in great shape and unlike
hurricane Ivan, it stayed in place on it's foundation this time.
July 21,
2005______________________________________________________________________________
Hurricane
Dennis brought down the antenna for local radio station WECM 1490 AM located off
Berryhill Road here in Milton. The owner asked Hugh, NT4Z, to help her get back
on the air. Hugh and Tom Manning, AF4UG, constructed an antenna
system out of the downed guy wires. They hooked this up to the helix house and
after some other minor repairs and retuning, the radio station was back on the
air.
Hugh wrote: "On Thursday morning I received a call from Marilyn
Alverez a friend of many years who owns WECM. Her radio tower had been
knocked over by Hurricane Dennis. The tower was broken in three pieces but
the section up to the first set of guy wires was still standing. She
runs the station with her son Michael and they were desperate to get back on the
air. It turns out that their station engineer was unavailable but
suggested she call some local hams who might be able to put up a dipole or
something to get her on the air. After she called me, I called Tom
Manning who agreed to help me and we went over to the station on Friday.
What we did was to figure out mathematically a 1/4 wave arrangement that
would load up a guy wire. With the help of Michael we spent
the afternoon rigging it. We had some difficulty getting it loaded because
of a bad capacitor in the feeder box (it turned out that there were two
bad caps). We played with it a bit but could not legally go
into it much further. Happily, the engineer was available on Friday
evening and he replaced the parts and by 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning, had
our antenna loaded properly. The station was back up on the air
radiating from our improvised antenna using a guy wire as a 1/4 wave vertical
antenna. Tom later heard the station quite well at the Alabama
border. It sounds as good as ever at my place. We each have thank
you cards and the Hamfest commercial is running almost hourly on WECM."

2005___________________________________________________________________________
Notwithstanding
hurricane damage, the 10th Annual Milton Hamfest was held as planned at the
County Auditorium. While attendance appeared down a little, those who
attended had a great time buying, selling and trading all manner of radio
equipment. Eight people passed their amateur exams during the VE testing
session. 3rd place award was won by WA2MVH of Pensacola, 2nd place went to
KF4UPJ of Fairhope, AL and the main award went to KF4IRC of Mobile,
AL.
This was Dave Lyle's initial run as Hamfest Coordinator (with plenty of
help from Walt and Pearl). I'm sure I can speak for the entire Club when I say
"Great Job Dave!"
The MARC participated in the 2010 ARRL Field Day. The club set up again on the
North end of Russell Harbor Landing which is located along the Blackwater
River in Milton. The club ran 3A NFL this year. The club had 10 hams that worked at
SSB HF table - SSB 6 meter table - PSK-31 radio tables. The club had a total of 8
other hams that dropped by to see the set up. We had one guest this year it was
Buddy Jordan Ward 1 Council member. Buddy was showed a full scale Field
Day Operation the in and out and the up and downs of setting up a 24 hours by
K4LWC Larry Carpenter. The club used computer logging again this year and it worked
great. As always K4SVX Ken Dun cooked up a storm, nobody went hungry, we
had lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday was pancakes and
sausage and other items that Ken cooked up.. Ken did get some time on the 6
meter table where he had a ball. The heat was there again this year. HI HI maybe
2011 we can have air conditioners. The club did a great score for a small showing.
MARC did the 15th Annual Hamfest at the Santa Rosa County Auditorium . The
club had
a grand price of a Yaesu FT-857D again this year. Plus MARC gave a way $ 600.00 in
cash prices over the two day hamfest. We had 450 hams and family's show up this
year. K4SVX Ken Dunn was the Chairman this year, KA0AGC was the co-chair this
year. WA4TFR Walter Yarborough was the main ticket seller again this year. MARC would like to THANK all MARC members that came out and help make this hamfest
great again.
Bob Perry KA0AGC supervised the MARC sponsored Floridatown Tailgater in Pace,
Florida. The weather worked out great again. The Tailgater had a lot of equipment being
traded between different hams from 7:30 AM to 11:00 AM. K4OZL Tony
Snow brought out a story board showing photo's and telling about our pass member
that had passed a way. This board was looked at closely by a hams that came out
to the tailgater. ( THANK YOU K4OZL for doing this ) KA0AGC Bob brought out the
MARC Com van, showing all the radio gear is up and working. KA0AGC has set up
new dates
for 2011 tailgater being in April and October, see club events.
The MARC had is annual picnic after 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Floridatown
Park. We had about 30 people show up. The club THANK all that showed up.
Tony Snow K4OZL and Helen Snow KI4ZYH gave the MARC a desktop computer.
It will be used in the MARC Com Van to show interested people
how Digital software works into ham radio. Maybe get a few people interested in
ham radio for 2011
